Conference Center

YMCA Camp Thunderbird operates throughout the year as a conference and retreat center, summer resident camp, environmental education center, day camp and after-school site. Located on beautiful Lake Wylie, S.C., the camp is 20 minutes west of Charlotte, N.C., and is easily accessible from all directions. Our goal is to provide facilities, service and programs that make your visit to Camp Thunderbird an enjoyable experience leading to life long memories.

Thunderbird is an ideal site for groups to meet and enjoy the atmosphere of our 110-acre lakeside property. We offer a wide range of facilities and program options to best serve you. Whether your goal is to use our accommodations to conduct your own programming or to call on our staff to lead selected activities for your group, our goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Conference Facilities

Cabins

28 cabins with heat, bathrooms and bunk beds (capacity: 420 people)

12 cabins - fresh air (screens), bunk bed and bath house (capacity: 100 people)

Recreation Hall

5,000-square-foot meeting hall with bathrooms, AC/heat, stage and fireplace 200 folding chairs, 20 tables, and PA system available on request

Johnson Hall

3,500-square-foot meeting hall with bathrooms, AC/heat and fireplace 500-square-foot meeting room (Chairs, tables and PA system available on request)

Amphitheater

500-seat outdoor amphitheater with stage, stage lights and campfire ring

Chapel

100-seat chapel for church services and meetings

Dining Hall

12,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, seats 500 people; AC/heat, PA system, stage and full meal service

Food Service

The Thunderbird food service staff prepares appetizing, well-balanced and nutritious meals, served buffet or cafeteria style, depending on your group’s preference. Arrangement can be made for special menu items foryour group.

Spiritual Renewal Weekends

Camp Thunderbird plays host to many organizations through- out the year who sponsor “Spiritual” weekends. Camp Thunderbird also sponsors two conferences of their own — an Adult Christian Leadership Conference for YMCA professionals and a Teen Christian Leadership Conference for YMCA and churches in the Charlotte area.

Indian Guides “How How”

Camp Thunderbird is host to many Indian Guide Federations and is proud to be part of a rich YMCA tradition of helping dads build strong ties with their sons and daughters.

Company Picnics

Throughout the year, companies have the opportunity to rent our facilities to provide a day of fun and express their appreciation to their employees. This is a great time to build a “team” spirit through a game of softball or volleyball, enjoy a swim at the pool, paddle around in canoes or just relax. Available Sundays during the school year from Labor Day to Memorial Day, and Saturdays during the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Family Camp

The weekends of Memorial Day and Labor Day are open to families. Cabins are rented to families and loosely, but structured activities are planned throughout the weekend for members to participate in and enjoy camp life with loved ones.
