Sustainability
YMCA Camp Thunderbird’s Environmental Education Center is committed to sustainability. Here are some examples of ways we’re incorporating sustainable practices into our Center. - Duke Energy and EnergyWise have equipped our Recreation Hall with 16 solar panels which, on a sunny day, power 50% of the Rec Hall’s electricity.
- Rain Barrels collect water from the Pioneer Cabin and EEC Shelter for use in classes and for watering our herb and vegetable gardens.
- Instant Hot Water Heaters in the cabins.
- We compost fruits and veggies from our dining hall to be used in our vegetable garden.
- Our new Duke Energy Pavilion was constructed using sustainable construction practices.
- We recycle plastic, aluminum, cardboard and paper throughout camp.
- We’ve installed low flush toilets throughout camp.
- We’ve replaced traditional light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs and LED lighting.
