Our fearless leader, Maura, is on her 6th year at Camp Thunderbird. Originally from Royal Oak, MI, Maura earned her Bachelor's degree in Biology from Alma College. Prior to her reign as our Environmental Education Center Director, Maura worked as a naturalist at Latta Plantation and held a TA position at Alma College's Biology department. Maura loves riding ponies, perfecting accents, and browsing office supplies stores.

Anna is originally from Nashua, NH, and she earned her Bachelor's degree in Biopsychology from Wagner College and her Master's degree in Psychology from Hunter College, both in New York City. This is her 3rd year at Thunderbird, but before heading south Anna lifeguarded at the Downtown Community Center in NYC and interned at the Bronx Zoo. During her down time, Anna enjoys teaching her boss how to ride horses, quoting youtube videos, and reminiscing about the 90's.

This is Amy's 4th season at Camp Thunderbird. Hailing from Catawba County, Amy earned her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Education from Warren Wilson College. While at Warren Wilson College, she worked for their athletic department as a photographer. When she's not fishing or stargazing, you can find Amy putting herself in the line of danger to take the perfect picture of Camp Thunderbird's wildlife.

Hayley Shannon, Scheduling Coordinator

Hayley earned her degree in Environmental Planning and Policy from Virginia Tech. This is her 4th season at Camp Thunderbird, and she lives not too far away in York, SC. Prior to working at Thunderbird, Hayley canvassed for the Gulf Restoration Network, worked at Six Flags Great Adventure, and volunteered at the Roanoke Zoo. When she's not encouraging others to recycle, Hayley loves skiing and hula hooping the day away.


John Allen originates from Winston-Salem, NC and earned his Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This is his 2nd season in Environmental Education, and John is no stranger to Camp Thunderbird. He has spent many summers holding counselor and head counselor positions for Camp Thunderbird's resident camp program. When he's not running around camp, John enjoys water skiing, playing basketball, recycling, and eating onions.

Katie Cleveland hails from Weddington, NC and earned her Bachelor's degree in Social Work from East Carolina University. This is her 2nd season at Camp Thunderbird, and Katie's no stranger to the YMCA. Katie has worked as a camp counselor and sports official for the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. In her spare time, Katie enjoys SCUBA diving, playing disc golf, and hanging with her dog, Charlee.


Rachel D'Angio is joining us for her 1st season at Camp Thunderbird' Environmental Education Center. Originally from Pittsford, NY, Rachel earned her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies from Hamilton College. Prior to moving down south, Rachel taught visitors about butterflies at the Seneca Park Zoo and taught high school students about her research in hydrofracturing in the Marcellus Shale. When she's not educating others, Rachel enjoys reading, baking, and cross-country skiing.


Stefan Flores originates from Charlotte, NC and earned his Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management from Appalachian State University. Although this is his 1st season with our Environmental Education Center, Stefan has prior experience working at Camp Thunderbird as the Resident Camp Assistant Land Director and camp counselor. During his free time Stefan enjoys exercising, reliving he glory days of the 90's, and eating.


Elliot Hall comes to us from Boone, NC where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management. Although this is his 1st season at Camp Thunderbird's Environmental Education Center, Elliot has spent 3 years with the YMCA of Greater Charlotte working at Camp Harrison as a Program Director, Chief of Water Adventure, and Senior Counselor. Elliot spends his free time running, eating frozen dinners, and searching for the perfect movie on Netflix.
 
Molly Kane is embarking on her 2nd season at Camp Thunderbird. Hailing from Sherrill, NY, Molly earned her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies from Hamilton College. Before her move to the Carolinas, Molly facilitated the high ropes course at Tripp Lake Camp and coached basketball at Amherst College. Her favorite activities include killin'; it on the basketball court, playing guitar, and reading.



Michael Peyton drove across the country from Manhattan Beach, CA to start his 1st season at Camp Thunderbird. Prior to working at our Environmental Education Center he earned his Bachelor's degree in History from the University of California Santa Cruz and worked as a cave naturalist, park guide, and camp counselor. In his free time, Michael enjoys surfing, baseball, and backpacking.

Mikey Picard is on his 3rd season at Camp Thunderbird. Originating from Readfield, ME, Mikey earned his degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maine, Orono. Before relocating below the Mason Dixon line, he served as the Waterfront Boating Director at YMCA Camp KV, lifeguarded at the University of Maine, and assisted with various fisheries research. During his free time, Mikey enjoys ice-fishing, sports, and listening to country music.


Andrea “Dre” Schneider is on her 2nd season at Camp Thunderbird. Originally from Elmore, OH, she earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Toledo. Prior to her move out east, Dre worked as an Outdoor Environmental School Instructor at Michindoh Ministries and Associate Trainer at Panera Bread. In her spare time, Dre loves playing guitar, being outdoors, and acting like a complete goofball.

Marcus Shanks is on his 2nd season at Camp Thunderbird and earned his Bachelor's degree in Public Relations from the University of Kentucky. Hailing from Lexington, KY, Marcus has worked at College Settlement Camp as a Unit Leader of Adventure Trips and the Outdoor School in Horsham as a Teacher/Naturalist. When he's not teaching kids about the outdoors, Marcus enjoys throwing footballs, making music, and chili dogs.

Maryann Shoge comes to Camp Thunderbird from Chestertown, MD where she earned her Bachelor's degree in English at Washington College. This is her 2nd season with us, and prior to her move down south Maryann worked as the Waterfront Director at Camp Bingle and helped with the after school program at Chesapeake Montessori School. Outside of work, Maryann loves to scrapbook, read, and shop.


Andrew “AJ” Zeilstra earned his Bachelor's degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management from Clemson University. This is his 1st season at Camp Thunderbird, and prior to joining our team AJ led backpacking, hiking, and kayaking trips as an Outdoor Recreation Intern and worked at the Foothills Area YMCA as an After School Care Assistant. When he's not working, AJ likes to read, write, and backpack.
