The Counselor In Training (CIT) program at YMCA Camp Thunderbird is designed to provide leadership experiences specific to camp counseling to rising high school juniors. Though most program participants have attended camp as campers, this is not necessarily a prerequisite. However, it should be noted that CIT selection is competitive. Candidates must submit a written application (available upon request through the camp office) by November 30, and will be interviewed by telephone during January and February. Candidates are advised of their status early in March.

CITs attend camp for four weeks. During that time, they live in a cabin with campers and counselors and meet daily with the program director to discuss observations and strategies for leading campers effectively. In addition, CITs spend a portion of each day lending leadership in the activity areas, and they coordinate two talent shows as part of their experience. During the afternoon activity time, CITs participate in the activities of their choice. Many elect to continue working to earn their bandanas, as well. It can be said that being a CIT offers participants the best of two worlds!

The CIT program at YMCA Camp Thunderbird helps to prepare tomorrow's leaders for summer camp. Junior counselors are selected from the CIT ranks. However, it should be noted that program participation does not guarantee selection as a junior counselor.

To request a CIT packet and application please contact our office at 800-732-3855 or email campers@campthunderbird.org.
